SOUTHEND UNITED 0After one of the most traumatic season's in the club's history, which saw the club placed into administration and become the first club to suffer a ten point deduction under League rules. The LDV Vans trophy win became one of the all time highs for the club.
The journey to Cardiff began at Notts County on 28th September 2004, A late Hector Sam goal securing a narrow 3-2 victory.
A home win against Stockport, followed by away victories at Chester and Hereford put The Dragons into a two legged Northern area Final against Oldham Athletic. Wrexham raced into a 5-1 lead, goals coming from Mark Jones, Darren Ferguson and a Juan Ugarte hat trick. Oldham recovered to make the final score 5-3.
The second leg was much tighter, Wrexham had most of the game but had to wait until just after the hour to settle the tie. A Chris Llewellyn shot from the edge of the area enough to put Wrexham into the Final.
A crowd of more than 36,ooo watched an absorbing game in the April sun. Southend started brightly, Freddie Eastwood hit a post and Wrexham keeper Ben Foster was called into action twice in a busy first period.
Llewellyn tried a shot when Ugarte was wide open, then Ugarte went close hitting the post.
Wrexham had the better of the second half and should have gone ahead on 72 minutes. First Bentley headed onto his own cross bar then Ugarte hit the post with the rebound.
And so to extra time. Eastwood was Southend's main threat, forcing another save from Foster.
But on 98 minutes Wrexham got their reward. Dennis Lawrence got his head on a corner and Ugarte flicked the ball past Flahaven from close range.
Southend went in search of an equaliser, Barrett went close with a header, but Foster saved again.
Wrexham sealed a famous victory on 118 minutes, when Ugarte put Llewellyn through on goal. His shot was saved by Flahaven but Darren Ferguson was on hand to put the rebound into the net.
