Sam Considering Wrexham Future

Wrexham's Trindad international striker striker Hector Sam is to decide within 48 hours whether to stay and fight for a regular first-team place in League Two at the Racecourse or join League One side Port Vale.

The 27-year-old has been in talks with Denis Smith at Wrexham and at port Vale and Smith is now waiting to hear whether or not Sam will be remaining in north Wales.

Smith had said that he could no guarantee Sam would be first choice this season.

"We all know Hector is a very skilful player and I've told him he will have the same opportunities as he's always had," he said.

"He needs to be more consistent so it's very much up to him. If someone comes into the team and does the job, they are not going to be dropped."

Smith has only one contracted player at the Racecourse for next season - Chris Llewellyn - after Chris Armstrong was released on a free, while Basque hitman Juan Ugarte - much sought after among Championship and League One teams - has yet to announce his plans for this season, and could bring in new names should Ugarte opt for a move elsewhere.

Wrexham cannot buy players with the club still in administration, however, Smith has been granted permission by the Football League to assemble a squad of 20 professional players, which he is trying to work to.

"I had hoped to have 19 outfield players, together with goalkeeper Mike Ingham and then nominate Michael Jones, who is still a scholar, as the second keeper," said Smith.

"But the League say he must be one of the 20-strong squad, so that's the sort of thing I'm having to deal with.

"Although I've been a manager for 20 years this is all totally new to me and, until the ownership issue is sorted out and the club comes out of adminstration, I'm dealing in ifs, buts and maybes as far as players' contracts are concerned.

"It's not an ideal situation but it's as good as it gets until the off-the-field problems are resolved. I'm getting great support from the administrators, Neville Dickens and Geoff Moss and the Wrexham Supporters' Trust are very much onside now as well."

As well as trying to assemble a tight squad for the new season beginning in just 5 weeks time, Smith will be out of contract tomorrow, but is happy to continue with the job.

"The administrators are not in a position to offer me a new contract, but they have asked me to stay and it's my choice to carry on," he added.
