"I just think the referee lost the run of the game to be quite truthful with you," said Carey.
"His performance tonight is the one we are all talking about."
Carey feels the referee's performance cost Wrexham the win against Macclesfield in their re-arranged first-round tie.
"When Matty Done hit the crossbar, we were shouting for a penalty and they go up the other end and from a very, very innocuous challenge he's given a penalty. It has cost us," he said.
Chris (Llewellyn) was booked and then given the red card, so I need that one clarifying first and Michael Proctor said he landed on the guy as he came down and he didn't know he was there when he jumped out of the way of the tackle."
Despite all that Carey was a upbeat about the performance.
"I think everybody who was here tonight and witness it could see the dramatic improvement in the performance and would have been pleased with the amount of chances we created and the opportunities and good areas we got into," he said.
"We actually should have won the game in the first 20 minutes where we had one-on-one with the goalkeeper on numerous occasions, but I've said for weeks it's all about the results."
