Wrexham's out of contract striker Juan Ugarte is unlikely to accept an offer from Barnsley with the deadly Basque hitman wanting to test himself with a Championship club.

Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie said: "We made an offer to Juan and his agent spoke to us this morning.

"It was a positive reply but the player wants to test himself at Championship level and I know that Crewe Alexandra and Coventry City are interested."

Barnsley have not yet given up hope of signing the former Real Sociedad striker, however, face stiff competition from among others, Cardiff City, Oldham and the aforementioned.

"His agent also told me that Juan would be still interested in a move to Oakwell if nothing came from the Championship," Ritchie added.
