Mike is longest serving Red

MIKE WILLIAMS today confessed it was a "strange" feeling being Wrexham FC's current longest serving player at the age of just 22.

The departure of Shaun Pejic and Simon Spender this year, and plenty more changes on the pitch over the last few seasons, means that Williams, who made his first team debut in September 2005 as a substitute in the 4-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers, holds that distinction.

Mike  made his 100th appearance in all competitions in the defeat at Oxford on April 11, but it was also the last time he featured for the Reds last season as he suffered a knee injury and was ruled out of the remaining four games.

Although honoured with the accolade of being the current longest serving player, Williams, who has come through the ranks at The Racecourse and signed his first professional deal in July 2005, said it was a surprise because he was still so young.

"I still feel young so it feels strange at 22 to be the longest serving player," said Williams, who turns 23 in October.

The out-of-contract Williams has been offered a new deal by Saunders but although he has not yet come to a decision about his future, he hinted that he would like to extend his stay.

"Dean Saunders has been away with Wales so my agent has not spoken to him," said Williams.

"My agent will go through the deal with the gaffer when he gets back and we will see what the best option is for me as a player.

"I am very happy here and being the longest serving player, I want to carry on where I left off and have a better outcome at the end of the new season to how we did last season."
