The Dragons pulled a goal back in the 55th-minute when striker Kaid Mohamed rounded Rovers goalkeeper Brad Friedel after being set up by fellow triallist Chris Simms.
Speaking after the game Wrexham born Savage spoke of his feelings when playing his first game in months after a broken leg.
"It was probably the most nervous I've ever been before a match," said Savage.
"I winced a few times in some of the tackles but the leg was fine. It was great to be back, it's been a long and hard six months.
"There have been a lot of downs and not many ups, but this match was my reward for a lot of hard work I've put in.
"It was a bad break - the surgeon told me it was one of the worst I could have had. It was shattered in several places and was a compound fracture.
"But it just shows that a lot of determination and hard to get back has paid off. I'm delighted."
Savage also revealed how one day he'd like to play and manage the club he supported as a boy.
"Hopefully one day I'll play for Wrexham and maybe even be the manager," Savage told BBC Sport.
"I used to stand in the Kop watching them every home game. I love the club.
"I was delighted when they stayed up last season and I still look for their results every week. Hopefully they can get more money in and go higher."
