Wrexham are hoping to tie up a move for an unnamed 24-year-old defender who was plying his trade in the Championship last season.
Manager Denis Smith had wanted a deal agreed before he went on holiday at the end of last week but the player was still mulling over the move.
A club spokesman said: "The manager is on holiday at the moment but he said as soon as he hears something from the player, he will let us know and we can take it from there."
He would be Wrexham's second pre-season signing after goalkeeper Michael Ingham arrived from Sunderland.
More new signings are set to follow and the Dragons have been linked with former Wales under-21 international Matthew Tipton, who played a part in Macclesfield reaching the League Two play-offs.
