Giant Wrexham defender Dennis Lawrence put both sets of forwards to shame and in doing so ended his side's run of four successive defeats.

The Trinidad international went up for a 74th minute corner, one of several inswingers from Darren Ferguson which had the home defence in all sorts of trouble.

Ferguson's effort found another Wrexham defender Brian Carey at the near post and his back-flicked header was straight into the path of Lawrence who made no mistake with his header from two yards out.

It was a rare highlight in a dour struggle played in non-stop rain and a gale.

Wrexham proved far more adapt at mastering the conditions with Hector Sam dangerous up front and winger Steve Thomas a constant thorn in Blackpool's side.

Blackpool's chances were few and far between as they produced perhaps their most lacklustre home performance of the season.

Twelve-goal Scott Taylor had the best first-half opportunity, but was foiled by a great block by veteran Wrexham keeper Andy Dibble.

Wrexham, with Ferguson a decisive figure in midfield, put increased pressure on the home back four in the second half, resulting in some schoolboy type howlers by the Blackpool defenders.

Sam went close with a 20-yard screamer and on-loan Blackpool keeper Brad Jones made a superb save at the feet of Chris Llewellyn.

Blackpool manager Steve McMahon may have thought he had played his trump card bringing on midfielder Richie Wellens with 30 minutes to go.

Wellens had been suffering from a cold, but his start on the bench surprised many home fans.

His arrival did spark some life into the home side who tried desperately to pull a goal back, but with striker John Murphy out of touch, it was left to Taylor to feed off scraps and when he managed to get two clear-cut opportunities in the last ten minutes, he put both wide.
