Wrexham fully deserved victory as a professional display gave the Welshman all three points in a game where Darlington were out-classed in all departments.

The home side had an early chance when captain Neil Maddison sent Barry Conlon clear, but Conlon was stopped in his tracks by a fine piece of defending from Dan Bennett.

Conlon was involved again in the seventh minute, he chested down a pass from Mark Ford but then saw his 20-yard drive sail over the crossbar.

Wrexham then took a grip on the game in the 17th minute when a long-range drive from Shaun Holmes was deflected wide and then two minutes later wingman Carlos Edwards tore into the Darlington defence before being stopped by home defender Matthew Clarke.

In the 22nd minute Jim Whitley tried his luck from 25 yards but his low drive sailed inches wide with Darlington keeper Andy Collett scramble across his goal-line.

The visitors continued to run the show and they almost took the lead in the 32nd minute. A deep cross from the right was punched away by Collett and the loose ball was headed back in by Holmes.

Darlington defender Simon Betts attempted to clear but only succeeded in heading the ball against his own post and as it came off the upright Collett gratefully claimed possession.

In the 34th minute only a last-ditch tackle from Ryan Valentine prevented Wrexham striker Hector Sam from opening the scoring.

As the visitors took the lead in the 36th minute, when Edwards crossed Holmes' header was flicked in by Andy Morrell.

The visitors kept Darlington at bay in the second half and the Welshmen should have doubled their tally three minutes from time when substitute Lee Trundle's attempted lob was easily stopped by Collett
