The problems just mount up for Grimsby, but Wrexham ended a bad little run with a good victory.

The Mariners have now gone nine games without a win, confidence is low and the fans hero Alan Pouton has left for First Division Gillingham.

It was a wretched night and with soccer on the television, little over 3,500 bothered to turn up to see if the Mariners could get back to winning ways.

After a bright start, they conceded goals to Chris Llewellyn on 19 minutes and Stephen Thomas three minutes later to leave them with an uphill task.

And although striker Iffy Onuora hit the Wrexham bar in the first minute of the second half with virtually their first attack, Wrexham went 3-0 up through Chris Armstrong on 52 minutes to make it game, set and match.

To their credit Grimsby did not throw in the towel and Phil Jevons headed a goal on 72 minutes to briefly rekindle hopes of a comeback, but despite continuing to press and again hitting the bar near the end, they were unable to breach the Wrexham defence again.

After three successive defeats, Wrexham needed to bounce back if they were to maintain their play-off hopes and manager Denis Smith had said that Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Notts County was "unacceptable".

They bided their time before hitting out at Grimsby with a double strike which left the home side, already low on confidence, with their chins on the floor.

And when the third goal came there was no way back for the beleaguered home side and their goal was little more than a consolation effort.

There must now be serious question marks over the future of Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves, who has been asked by the board to concentrate solely on managing the side rather than playing.
