Rushden & Diamonds and Wrexham fought out an exciting draw at Nene Park in a game which neither side deserved to lose.

Wrexham started the better of the two sides and took the lead in the ninth minute, taking advantage of Rushden being temporarily reduced to ten men because of an injury to Mark Peters, Carlos Edwards rising to head home a Hector Sam cross.

The visitors dominated the early play and Rushden rarely created a chance in the opening quarter. After 27 minutes Rushden full-back Tarkan Mustafa made a fine burst down the right and crossed superbly for Onandi Lowe to head inches wide.

A minute later Sam had a golden opportunity for the visitors, when he was clear on goal but he was unable to chip Rushden keeper Billy Turley.

Wrexham veteran keeper Andy Dibble made a fine fingertip save following a fierce free-kick from Lowe. But, the striker got his revenge in the 43rd minute when Dibble failed to hold onto Lowe's free-kick and Paul Hall followed up to fire home the rebound.

Wrexham had a good chance to regain the lead in the 48th minute when Andy Morrell set up Dan Bennett, but he shot over from 10 yards out with only Turley to beat.

Rushden were close to taking the lead in the 64th minute when Hall sent Mustafa clear on the right and he crossed superbly, but Scott Partridge failed to shoot home when unmarked.

The visitors eventually took the lead in the 66th minute, when substitute Lee Trundle put Morrell through and Wrexham's leading goalscorer coolly took the ball round Turley and shot home from an acute angle.

But Rushden grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 80th minute, when Lowe held off several challenges to put fellow Jamaican international Hall through and he cleverly beat his man and finished from six yards out
