Wrexham scored an impressive 3-2 victory over Rushden & Diamonds thanks to a superb first half performance at Nene Park.
The visitors opened the scoring on ten minutes thanks to a superb individual goal from Carlos Edwards. The Trinidadian picked the ball up just inside his own half and skipped past Paul Underwood before firing into the left hand corner of the net with an excellent left foot strike.
From that moment there was only one team in it for the rest of the half as Wrexham launched attack after attack on Rushden's goal.
On 15 minutes Chris Llewellyn should have scored with a header following Lee Jones' cross, while nine minutes later Carlos Edwards was off target with a long range effort which fell to Jones whose header was comfortably saved by Paul Evans.
On 35 minutes Gary Mills needlessly gave away a free kick on the edge of the Diamonds penalty area and Darren Ferguson stepped up to fire home a free kick with the aid of both uprights.
In the second half, Rushden changed their formation and made more of a match.
On 52 minutes the former Newcastle and West Ham striker Paul Kitson lost and won the ball on the edge of the Wrexham penalty area before curling a superb 20 yard shot past Andy Dibble.
Four minutes later Wrexham regained their two-goal lead. Ferguson threaded a superb pass through to Hector Sam and the striker coolly beat Evans from close range.
Straight from the kick off Andrew Edwards lost his marker but could not get enough power on his shot following Underwood's free kick while at the other end Llewellyn was inches wide with another 20 yard shot.
On 66 minutes Rushden reduced the arrears once again following a corner from Andrew Burgess. Barry Hunter's header came back off the bar leaving Kitson to head home from two yards.
The home side threw everything at the visitors but could not break their defence down for a third time.
