Stockport hung on for another priceless victory - 2-1 against Wrexham at Edgeley Park - as their brave battle to avoid the drop goes on.

With so much at stake for the home side, manager Jim Gannon was delighted to see Stockport get off to a dream start. After just five minutes Tes Bramble nodded a Keith Briggs free-kick neatly into the path of Ashley Williams, and the central defender coolly flicked a header home past stranded goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

Bramble then managed to plant a free header straight at Ingham, but on 15 minutes the home fans were screaming for a penalty when Dennis Lawrence looked to have hauled down Bramble.

Midway through the first half Bramble blew a great chance when he scuffed his shot with only Ingham to beat, and with County now well on top, the recalled Michael Malcolm saw a powerful shot bravely blocked.

Wrexham eventually hit back after the half-hour mark with a powerful shot from Jonathan Walters which was blocked. Seconds later Matt Derbyshire found space 12 yards out, but he was denied by a super save from home goalkeeper James Spencer.

Wrexham finally got their reward on 38 minutes following a spot of panic in the Stockport defence. Michael Raynes twice failed to clear and there was Simon Spender on hand to lash the ball home from 10 yards.

Raynes only took four minutes to atone for his error, though, as he put Stockport back in front when heading home a tempting cross from Jamie Ward.

Loan-man Ward had Stockport's first chance after the break when he disappointingly fired wide from 15 yards, while at the other end Walters rose well but glanced a header wide.

Adam Griffin then tried his luck for Stockport, but they just couldn't seem to find that all-important killer third goal.

Substitute Lee McEvilly went close for Wrexham as they certainly weren't giving up, but Stockport sub Liam Dickinson then saw a close-range shot blocked on the line by Mike Williams with time running out.
