An away win gave Macclesfield Town a big boost ahead of SaturdayÂ’s FA Cup match with first division Watford.
Delighted manager David Moss said: "We have taken four points from two games and I am delighted with all of my players. They are shattered but elated." He added: "It's nice going into the FA Cup on the back of this win. We can relax and enjoy the game." A late goal that sealed Wrexham's defeat sent the home fans streaming for the exits and those who were left booed the team at the end.
Home manager Denis Smith said he was bitterly disappointed with the poor performance. He said: "You have highs and lows in life and in football. I don't think I could feel much lower than this.
"If we think we have any chance of getting out of this division we need to do better. There is no reason for a performance like that." He said that to describe the two second-half goals as schoolboy stuff would have been insulting to schoolboys.
Defender Shaun Pejic got Wrexham off to a bad start with an early own goal. He tried to head Lee Hardy's fizzing left-wing cross away, but turned it into his own net.
Hardy was wide with a 20-yard shot and when he tried again from a narrow angle, goalkeeper Andy Dibble pushed the shot round the post. Danny Whitaker was out of luck with a 20-yard free-kick that hit a Wrexham post.
Paul Edwards was WrexhamÂ’s threat with lightning left-wing attacking which caused Macclesfield many problems. He set up the home sideÂ’s only goal, beating his man and crossing for Lee Trundle to angle a fierce left-foot drive in off the far post.
Andy Morrell had a header saved and Paul Barrett was also foiled when Danny Adams cleared off the Macclesfield line.
Matthew Tipton put Macc in front again only 23 seconds into the second half.
Wrexham made a double substitution, bringing on Hector Sam as an extra striker to play with three up front for the last half hour, but the move failed. Trundle was nearest to scoring with a chip that hit the bar.
In the final minutes a weak backpass from Pejic set Macclesfield up for their third goal. David Eaton reached the ball first and although Dibble, back from a 12-match injury lay-off, seemed to have the shot covered he let the ball trickle through his hands into the net.
