Wrexham came out on top of a game marred by mistakes from both sides which ended in both managers not feeling too happy with the result.
Jon Walters tapped Wrexham into the lead after good work by Andy Holt on the right before Torquay broke for their first opening. Darren Garner put in the first of three corners which were all cleared with the closest chance coming when Alan Connell drove an angled shot at goalkeeper Michael Ingham who beat it out. Jo Kuffour had the next opening but fired too high.
Wrexham lost Holt midway through the first half with a recurrence of an injury and replaced him with another recent injury victim Paul Warhurst who lasted until the second half when he too was replaced by Simon Spender.
Walters came under pressure from Craig Taylor and missed Wrexham's next chance, hooking his shot straight at goalkeeper Andy Marriott, who had received a great ovation from the home crowd who recalled his five years with the Wrexham side.
Matt Hewlett had Torquay's next chance, set up by Connell to drive in a fierce shot that Ingham turned one handed over the crossbar.
Torquay should have levelled just before half time when Ingham saved Kuffour's shot but from the clearance Wrexham broke upfield to grab their second goal. Mark Jones punted the ball on and Dean Bennett broke on the left to drive a low shot under the keeper.
Simon Spender made it 3-0 early in the second half when Walters beat the offside trap, Marriott parried his shot and Spender followed up to hit he rebound home from close range.
Torquay's opening goal was one that Wrexham keeper Ingham will want to forget. He saved from Kuffour and calmly rolled the ball out, not realising that the Torquay man was behind him. As the keeper stood back ready to take his goal kick Kuffour calmly whipped the ball away to Connell who dashed in to score.
Darren Ferguson produced a corner that Walters met with a powerful header which was well saved by Marriott before Alex Smith crossed from the left for Walters to tap in the fourth goal. It was all over as a contest before Darren Garner floated in a free kick for Tony Bedeau to score a late consolation for the visitors.
